Can stimulus money save the construction industry?
Now, new home construction has virtually ceased and there’s an ever-dwindling number of commercial construction projects….
Although local drivers will bear witness to the fact that road construction will always be with us throughout the valley, is there any hope on the horizon for Nevada’s beleaguered construction workers?
News 3’s Jerry Brown spoke with construction industry officials to find out their thoughts on what the future holds for Nevada hard hats.
“In the construction industry, every construction worker, trades woman, and tradesman… they’re always looking for the next job to go to,” says Steve Ross, Southern Nevada Building and Construction Trades Council.
But what if there were no existing construction jobs? Danny Thompson of the Nevada AFL-CIO doesn’t sugar-coat the current state of construction opportunities.
“I don’t see any jobs on the books that are coming. (The construction situation is) bleak and I think at the end of this year, first of next year there’s just not going to be any construction jobs to speak of.”
Unemployment in the 18 building trades unions in Reno stands at over 50 percent. Here in the south, some major building projects are winding down as well….
